Hopi Ear Candles

Ear candling as a complementary therapy has become increasingly popular in the last 20 years, although it is rooted in antiquity, having been practised for hundreds it not thousands of years.  The therapy has many alternative titles, including “ear coning”, “thermotherapy”, “thermal auricular therapy” and “thermo-auricular therapy.  It is best known, however, as Hopi Ear Candling, as it seems that the oldest recorded use of ear candles is by the Hopi Pueblo tribe who live in the South Western part of the United States of America.  Paintings of ear candles are in existence dating far back into history.

The reasons for their use and the stories behind their use, which was for both spiritual and physical purposes, were not written down but painted and verbally handed down by the Shamen “holy people” of the tribe.  It is probable that they were used in initiation rituals and healing ceremonies.

The Biosun candles that we use are made by hand today using the traditional recipe and finest quality ingredients.  They are made from pure beeswax, untreated cotton, honey extract and traditional herbs, such as Sage, St John’s Wort, and Camomile, and some include pure essential oils.

 How Do They Work?
Ear candles have a purely physical function.  A light suction action and the movement of the flame create a vibration of air in the candle, generating a massage-like effect on the ear drum.  This induces a pleasant feeling of warmth and a balance of pressure in the ears, forehead and sinuses.  It is soothing and helpful for a huge range of conditions.
